Which is more eco-friendly, burning my cardboard in my wood stove...?
or throwing my cardboard in with my trash, to be burned at the local incinerator? (We have an incinerator in my area, not landfills.) My area does not recycle cardboard, only the most basic plastics and glass.
There may not be a hard-and-fast definitive answer to this question because it depends to a great deal on what area you're in. Some jurisdictions sort trash (so if you throw in cardboard they'll pull it out). While burning that produces carbon is rarely a good option, in some areas (where there is already a lot of particulate matter and the air quality index is a chronic issue) than relying a lot on your wood burning stove is not a good thing. The type of incinerator your area uses matters as well--some areas sort the trash use different incineration for different types of waste, for smaller communities it's often "one size fits all." Because of the bad rep that many community incineration programs have, I'm biased to you burning it in your wood stove to help provide heat or as kindling during cold weather--but that's without knowing your jurisdication's incineration details. In short, a definitive answer really depends upon where you are. That said, I think there are a variety of ways you can handle the cardboard other then putting it in the trash or burning it.
1. Depending upon the type of cardboard and what ink it's got on it, it could be excellent composition material in your garden or yard. And if shredded, it could even go into a compost pile.
2. When I had pet mice and hamsters, I used the cardboard for bedding. So there are a range of pets that you could cut up or shred boxes for and then use as bedding instead of commercial products.
3. Check with your trash collection. They may not collect cardboard right now but another trash service might. Or a group of neighbors could band together, pay for one bin and everyone puts their cardboard in.
4. This isn't a continual solution but some types of boxes during some times of the year will be in demand. For instance, end of semester near colleges and universities--students need "moving" boxes. Schools use boxes for storage and big stuff (that held fridges or ovens) for art backdrops. Odyssey of the Mind competitions in March are one example where around the country elementary and secondary kids go dumpster diving looking for big sheets of cardboard to use in their problem presentations. Even if all of this cardboard eventually ends up in the trash, it got a 2nd or 3rd use before it got incinerated or burned up.
5. And part of this is also proactive: buy products that involve less packaging (so there are fewer wrappers, fewer boxes).
